Thaidene Nene National Park Reserve
Reminder about Fishing Permits and Regulations

March 15/2021 Yellowknife, NT. As northerners are beginning to plan their staycations on Great Slave Lake this summer, Parks Canada wants to remind NWT residents and visitors to Thaidene Nene National Park Reserve about what to expect when fishing. For recreational fishing in the waters of Thaidene Nene National Park Reserve, including Wildbread Bay, Charlton Bay and portions of Christie and McLeod Bays in Great Slave Lake, a valid Parks Canada fishing permit is required. A fishing permit is not required for traditional harvesting by Aboriginal peoples for food, social and ceremonial purposes.

Parks Canada fishing permits are different from those issued by the Government of the Northwest Territories. Parks Canada fishing permits have a modest fee; all revenue generated goes back into supporting Parks Canada. Fishing permit fees are being waived until March 31, 2022. Even though permits this year are free, they are still required in the waters of the National Park Reserve. Permits are available online using the Parks Canada website or in-person for guests at Frontier Lodge or Trophy Fishing Lodge.

What kinds of regulations apply for the waters of Thaidene Nene National Park Reserve

• The fishing regulations under the Fisheries Act, including the Northwest Territories Fisheries Regulations and the Fishery Act (General) Regulations, apply to Thaidene Nene National Park Reserve.
• The catch and possession limits remain the same as for waters outside the National Park Reserve. The National Park Reserve overlaps with Area VI of Great Slave Lake. The Lake Trout possession and catch restrictions for Area VI apply. The total daily catch limit for lake trout in Area VI, regardless of whether you are inside or outside the National Park Reserve, is one (1) and the possession limit is two (2).
• For easy reference, you can use the Northwest Territories Sport Fishing Regulations Guide for catch limits, gear types and other information.
• Barbless hooks are mandatory.
• In the National Park Reserve, dispose of entrails by puncturing the swim bladder and depositing them into deep or moving water downstream of your camp, using a boat if available.
• Parks Canada encourages anglers to minimize their impact on fish caught during the catch and release process.
